  1. Melt the butter and marshmallows in heavy saucepan over low heat. Stir often.
  2. Put popcorn in a large bowl and pour marshmallow mixture over top. Stir well to combine. Add the candy and nuts and mix together. Pack into a greased tube cake tin. Let set till cooled. Turn out onto a plate to serve. Cut in wedges.

1. Plain Pancake

Pancakes can be made using various flavours but your kid can savour this plain pancake with any topping of his preference.


  • 4- Medium sized eggs
  • 1 cup (approx 140 g) &ndash Plain flour
  • 1 ½ cup &ndash Milk
  • 2 tbsp- Butter
  • Vegetable oil for cooking

How to make

  1. Sieve the flour into a bowl.
  2. Add eggs to the flour and mix well.
  3. Now gradually pour milk and keep whisking the batter.
  4. Once the batter is lump free, add melted butter and mix well.
  5. Heat any non-stick pan over medium flame and grease it with the oil.
  6. Gradually pour the pancake batter with a ladle and spread a little.
  7. Cook on the other side too.
  8. Serve with any topping or syrup of your kiddo&rsquos choice.

  • 1 Medium-sized egg
  • 1 ½ cup flour

  • 1 lemon zest
  • 1 tsp golden syrup
  • 1 ½ cup milk

How to make

  1. Take flour, cream of tartar and baking soda in a bowl and mix well.

3. Ham And Cheese Pancake Rolls

This recipe is a twist to a usual pancake recipe and the crunchiness of the ham adds to the flavour.


For the pancakes

  • 2 medium-sized eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 2 ½ cups milk (preferably skimmed milk)
  • Any vegetable oil for frying

For the rolls

  • 12-13 slices of ham
  • 1 ½ cup cooked spinach
  • I cup grated cheddar cheese
  • ¾ cup half-fat crème fraiche
  • 2-3 sliced spring onions (optional)

How to make

  1. Take flour in a big bowl.
  2. Add eggs, butter and some milk in the flour and whisk well.
  3. Add extra milk to the batter for a smooth consistency, if required.
  4. Heat a pan and brush it with some oil.
  5. Remove the pan from heat, pour the batter and swirl around the pan.
  6. Put the pan back on flame and cook the pancake from both sides or until done. Make 8 pancakes and keep aside.
  7. Spread all the pancakes and place ham, spinach, cheese and spring onions nicely over them.
  8. Carefully roll the pancakes and place them in a greased baking dish.
  9. Mix some leftover grated cheese, crème fraiche and spring onions and spread it over the rolled up pancakes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees cook for 30-35 minutes.

  3. Add the dry ingredients gradually into the wet ones and whisk well till no lumps remain.
  4. Place a non-stick pan on the gas stove and heat it on medium flame and grease with some oil.
  5. Pour the pancake batter and cook well on both sides.

Rainbow cake | butter sponge cake

They say less is more? Not true! Especially in the case of a five year old’s birthday cake.

I’m still recovering from little Miss Charlotte’s birthday party yesterday. It wasn’t the preparation and cooking that took it out of me – but instead trying to entertain the 35 kiddies! It probably didn’t help that they’d all had their weekly dose of sugar in the one afternoon. Between fairy bread, cupcakes, coloured popcorn and lolly bags, I think it’s safe to say that they were all happily fed. Not to mention the sausage rolls, mini quiches, snags on bread and more fruit than you could poke a stick at. It was a real ‘special treat’ kind of day.

But the real star of the show, the main event was the 8 tiered butter cream rainbow cake that my girls and I’ve had in the pipeline for the past couple of weeks. Made using my favourite novelty cake recipe for a delicious butter sponge, along with lots of food colouring and a truck load of butter cream – it couldn’t of been better.

Granted, it’s a bit of a fiddly recipe but once you’ve made it once, you’ll be able to do it in your sleep. Just please make sure you read the recipe thoroughly and don’t miss the section under ‘Lo’s tips’ below which you’ll find helpful. The best thing about this cake is that you can cook the cakes ahead of time, popping them in the freezer until the morning of there is no fancy icing technique required – simply slap on some butter cream in any colour that you wish, and then last but not least – make sure you have a killer cake topper to throw on top (my sparkly ‘Happy Birthday’ one bought from The Pop-Up Party Co) along with any little figurines you might fancy. Think princess dolls, Lego people, little trains, action figures, Shopkins, LOL’s or just keep it nice and simple. The real exciting part is cutting the cake open to reveal the colourful layers hidden within.

I’m just worried that one day they’ll make a packet mix for zucchini slice! Then I’ll really be out of a job.

1. Fruit Wands
Fruit and marshmallow kebabs make fabulous magic wands for fairies, wizards and all manner of magical creatures. Add a melon star (cut with a cookie cutter) to the end of your kebab stick for a fabulous finish.

What could be simpler than buttered bread covered in coloured sugar sprinkles? I love fairy bread because it can easily be cut into all manner of shapes with a cookie cutter to match your party theme.

6. Popcorn
To make our Princess Popcorn, we drizzled white chocolate over our popped corn and sprinkled it with colourful rainbow sprinkles. Pop it in the fridge to set, then serve.

A classic vanilla cupcake can be dressed up in a myriad of ways with icing, sprinkles, lollies or homemade cupcake toppers.

Another food that is so easy to theme – cookies! For shaped cookies, I like the Planning with Kids Easy Cookie Cutter recipe but in the interest of full disclosure I outsourced these Cinderella slippers to a friend of a friend! Don’t they look great.

9. Shaped Sandwiches
Whip up a loaf of sandwiches with your favourite sandwich fillings and then cut them into shapes with your favourite themed cookie cutters. Where were we before the cookie cutter was invented.

10. Mini Quiche
A great savoury option, mini quiche can be made with any number of different flavour combinations. Though ham and cheese always seems to be a hit with small people!

Whether you make pizza shapes (our star pizzas were made on a flatbread base) or rolled pizza pinwheels (made with puff pastry), pizza is pretty much the #1 favourite savoury party food of our pint-sized party guests,

10 Healthy Summer Food Ideas For Kids:

The best and healthy summer foods for kids are drinks, juices, fruit Cups, yogurt, wraps, burgers, pancakes, eggs, popcorn, watermelon/musk melon and naturally sweet. Read below to know about each food option in detail.

1. Drinks and Juices:

When the mercury rises, you need to prepare foods which are cool! Juices, especially those made with coconut water, lemon, cucumber or watermelon are coolants for the blistering heat. Blend it with fresh sprigs of mint.

2. Fruit Cups:

Whether its breakfast, dessert or a mid-afternoon snack, a chilled fruit salad is a fresh, delicious choice for the entire family. Halve a melon and fill it with sliced papaya or tender coconut slices.

3. Yogurt:

Curd is a delicious coolant. You can also add fruits to the curds to make a lip-smacking and wholesome smoothie or just churn it with water, add some jaljeera powder. You can also give masala buttermilk during the summer.

4. Wraps:

A revised version of a chapatti roll, a wrap has lots of health wrapped in it. You can fill in lots of those stamina foods – beans, low-fat cheese, vegetables (red and green capsicum, corn, green onions, spinach, mushrooms), and chicken into these all time favourite among kids.

5. Burgers:

Though there is so much chest-beating about it as a junkie, you could spice it up with healthy fillings like whipped curd instead of mayonnaise. Instead of red meat, you can grill them with patties made of chicken, lentils or vegetables. Fruits, like a pineapple round with a dash of pepper, also make healthy patties.

6. Pancakes:

For an instant energy booster, dish out a fun breakfast for kids with a sliced banana pancake, made of whole wheat grain and topped with fresh chilled strawberries. Your kid will gorge on this yummy breakfast for sure!

7. Eggs:

Used with caution, eggs have an amazing quotient of stamina. Scrambled eggs sautéed with mushrooms, along with wholegrain bread is a favourite amongst kids. Egg-nog with a few drops of vanilla essence, French toast with almond flakes and caramel egg-custard also work great with picky eaters.

8. Popcorn:

Yes! Pop corn is a healthy food for kids in summer. Add a dash of cheese, salt and pepper to make it zingy and take caution to serve in small quantities.

9. Watermelon / Musk melon:

Serve it as juice or wedges, either way they are delicious. Make sure they are on your dining table every meal and eat the seeds as well for its iron content. You can also freeze water melon sorbet and enjoy them as popsicles, for a change!

10. Naturally sweet:

A fistful of almonds, raisins and walnuts together, mixed in a small cup of yoghurt, is healthier than Nutty Ice cream. Dark chocolate sauce topping on strawberries is another “cool” deal. If needed add little amount of whipped cream as a special treat.
